Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut was granted bail after a magistrate's court in Mumbai convicted him in a defamation case filed by Medha Somaiya, wife of former BJP MP Kirit Somaiya. Raut's sentence of 15 days imprisonment and a Rs 25,000 fine was also suspended for 30 days, giving him time to file an appeal.
The case, related to defamatory statements made by Raut in 2022, was filed after he accused the Somaiyas of involvement in a "toilet scam." Reacting to the verdict, Raut criticized the judiciary's alleged centralization, citing his comments were based on previous allegations raised by other political leaders.
Medha Somaiya had demanded an apology and a permanent injunction against Raut for defamatory statements made in media and Shiv Sena's mouthpiece, Saamana. The court, after reviewing the evidence, found Raut guilty under Section 500 of the IPC.
Raut expressed disappointment with the judgment but vowed to respect the court's decision and pursue an appeal. Medha Somaiya's case centered on maintaining her reputation, which she argued was damaged by baseless and malicious accusations.
